Now that this is the unit you have decided to join, you will need to fill out all the forms and return them to the unit commander along with any dues or fees. Forms for the 1st Louisiana/5th New York may be downloaded from this page.

 

Once this is completed you will be assigned a member to help guide you as you purchase your "kit" or uniform, accoutrements and weapon. Your mentor will assist you in making the right choices in your purchases, so then you will not waste your money on the wrong items. We do have a limited amount of "loaner" gear to help you get started so you do not need everything right away.

 

You will then start the "training" process. Don't worry if everything feels a bit weird at first, and remember that today's military was an evolution of the training recieved by the soldiers in 1861 (and if you are in or have been in the modern military you will discover that some things are the same and some are very different).

 

You must be 14 years or older to be a "rifleman" and over 12 years old to be a field musician.

 

Below is a basic checklist for first timers:

 

1. Contact the Captain or First Sergeant and express your interest in attending your first event

2. Download and fill out all the nessesary forms and get them to the Captain

Complete the NCWC Safety Test

If you are a minor (under the age of 18), OR you are bringing a minor that is not your own child you also need:

Minor Consent Form

A release letter from the/your parents/guardian that gives temporary guardianship of the minor to an adult that is going to be at the event. Please include dates and contact numbers.

 

Prepare for your first event -

-Wear comfortable shoes. They need to be black shoes, such as work boots, but solid black tennis shoes will do during your first few events

-Most wear their uniform to sleep in, but some may wish to bring sleeping clothes

-Depending on the weather, you should bring a sleepbag and extra blanket to sleep in

-Personal toiletries such as deodorant, toothbrush and paste, and any medications

-We recommend that you bring a few dollars at your first event so that you can go with your mentor to the sutlers tent (even small trinkets will add to your impression right away)

-Be ready to have FUN and LEARN LEARN LEARN

 

Things you will NOT NEED your first event:

You do not need plates, forks etc as we have them for you too, as long as you let us know you'll need them!

You do not need worry about having the right uniform as we have loaner gear.

Ammunition, we will supply it to you for your first event.

Please do not bring a negitive attitude.
